Cardiac CT

What is Cardiac CT?

Cardiac CT also known as Coronary CT Angiography (CTA) is a procedure to study the coronary arteries of your heart. It uses super-fast CT scanners to acquire images within a very short period of time. It can also evaluate heart function and structure as well as the large blood vessel leaving and returning to your heart.

Advantages of Cardiac CT compared to a Catheter Angiography

  1. Decreased morbidity and mortality risk
  2. Less expensive expense
  3. Additional cardiac information is available (structure and function) through a cardiac CT
  4. Significantly increased non-cardiac findings (20%) may be found from a cardiac CT
  5. Cardiac CT has the same contrast  and radiation risk as a catheter angiography

Did you know?

  • 91% of cardiac catheterizations are done on an elective basis.
  • 40-50% of 1.8 million catheterizations that are done annually are normal.
  • Cardiac CT has a 95% negative predicted value (NPV) that rules out the need for a conventional catheter angiogram.
